Tim Kliphuis, John McCormick and The Badgers at Owens

On the 10th July, violinist Tim Kliphuis joined world famous gypsy jazz band, The Rosenberg Trio to headline Britain’s premier gypsy jazz festival, “L’esprit Manouche” in Birmingham.
The following day, he was booked to perform at Owens Brasserie with guitarist Gary Potter and double bass player, John McCormick with support from The Badgers. However, with minutes to spare before the start of the gig, Gary was nowhere to be seen and was not answering his ‘phone and then the news came through that he had been rushed to hospital suffering from appendicitis.
Plan B was duly put into action and with absolutely no rehearsals, Chris and James took to the stage to cover for Gary.

There followed 1 ½ hours of gypsy jazz, swing and bluegrass instrumentals including “I got rhythm”, “Minor swing” and “Sweet Georgia Brown” with Tim taking the lead, interspersed with solos from Chris, James and John.

On a stiflingly hot evening, the street outside Owens gradually filled with passers-by who were as appreciative of the impromptu performance as those seated inside.

Tim was similarly impressed and has promised to join The Badgers for more gigs later this year.

PS. Gary's illness was not as serious as was first thought. He has now made a full recovery and is playing again.
